National Mathematics Day 2009 - In the classroom

Ideas for recognising National Mathematics Day with students in your classroom include:

  • Challenging students to think about what mathematics learning will be like in the future: ask them to draw a picture of what a maths classroom might look like, or to describe what their children might do during mathematics lessons.
  • Creating a classroom display titled "It's moments like these you need mathematics..."; then share the results in a school newsletter, or in your local shopping centre or public library.
  • Exploring with students how mathematics is useful in various occupations - you might like to get started by visiting our links to some websites focused on mathematics and careers.
  • Thinking about what you are doing in the classroom today, and how it links to a vision of mathematics for the 21st century - we have made a start with some classroom activities which are available as PDF files.
  • Asking students to write an outline for the script for the next in the series of 'You Can Do Maths' community service announcements. The AAMT is running a competition that could result in your students' work being professionally produced into a TV advertisement, thanks to support from Kinetic Education, our partners in the You Can Do Maths Campaign.Click here to receive more information, guidelines and the entry form.

If you have other suggestions to share, please send them to Chris (cstocks@aamt.edu.au).
