National Mathematics Day 2009 - In the wider community

Many members of your school community will already have seen one or both of the televised community service announcements launched by AAMT in late 2008. These form part of the "You Can Do Maths" campaign, which aims to inform young people (and their parents) about the range of careers that involve mathematics.

National Mathematics Day is an ideal opportunity to continue highlighting the message that maths is everywhere, and we use it every day.

You might ask the wider school community to think about - and share - the ways in which they use mathematics. Perhaps include a question for families in the school newsletter, and have students collate responses into a display; or invite some guests (parents/community members etc) for a forum discussion of where they use mathematics in their home and workplace. A look at our links to some websites focused on mathematics and careers might help you to get started.

If you have other ideas to share, please send them to Chris (cstocks@aamt.edu.au).
