National Quality Teaching Agenda – AITSL
About AITSL
The Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) has been designated to be the lead national agency in the development, implementation and quality assurance of the national system for the accreditation of pre-service teacher education programs. One of its first initiatives is the accreditation of pre-service teacher education programs through graduate teacher standards, program standards and the accreditation process.
The work of AITSL is outlined in a Letter of Expectation from then Minister Gillard.
For more information about AITSL, go to the AITSL website.
Work in 2011
The culmination of one of AITSL's major initial tasks – to develop and get national agreement on a set of National Professional Standards – came in February when the AITSL Standards were endorsed by MCEECDYA (the Ministers of Education). Click here for details. AAMT has made several representations to AITSL about further work to link the Associations work on professional standards with the AITSL standards.
In April MCEECDYA endorsed a scheme for national accreditation of pre-service teacher education programs. They endorsed AITSL's paper that sets the standards to be used to judge programs, and the procedures to be used across the country. Click here for more details.
Work in 2010
During 2010 AITSL consulted on a range of initiatives during the year.
A response from the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers to the initial draft standards (May)
The proposed graduate teacher standards are designed to describe a continuum of capabilities and expectations appropriate to the Australian teaching profession at four levels; graduate, proficient, highly accomplished and lead teacher. The Standards will form the basis for accreditation of pre-service teacher education courses and teacher registration. The AAMT has provided a response. Please click here to access the paper.
Feedback on a National System for Accreditation of Pre-service Teacher Education Programs (August)
AITSL released a consultation paper in August, with a very short timeline for feedback. The AAMT provided a brief response.
Validation of National Professional Standards (September-November)
AITSL has sought input to validate the proposed Standards. The validation process uses two methods: workshops and an on-line survey. The AAMT nominated practising teachers from each of the Affiliated Associations to attend one-day validation workshops held in each of the states and territories in October. AITSL sought further feedback through an on-line survey, which members were invited to complete.
