National curriculum
The development and implementation of a national curriculum is being conducted at the instruction of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG).
The National Curriculum Board has been established to develop Australian national curriculum that sets core content and the achievement standards that are expected of students from Kindergarten to Year 12 in English, mathematics, the sciences and history. Members of the AAMT are encouraged to register for online participation in the Board’s current and future processes for consultation.
As the first phase of the process to develop the national curriculum the Board has developed ‘framing papers’ for each subject area. These are intended to identify the “broad directions for what teachers should teach and young people should learn from Kindergarten to Year 12”.
The National Curriculum Board recently sought feedback on the National Mathematics Curriculum: Framing Paper, and AAMT provided a formal response to that document from the Association.
AAMT Position Paper on National Curriculum
In mid-2008 the AAMT Council agreed its position on the development of national curriculum in mathematics.
Position of national professional associations in English, history, mathematics and science on national curriculum
The four associations involved in the first 'round' of national curriculum development are maintaining close contact as the process unfolds. As part of this collaboration, the four associations (AATE, HTAA, AAMT and ASTA) made a public statement of their shared commitments in June 2008.
