Development of papers
When position statements and other papers are under development, members are consulted through the Representing Teachers section of this site. A timeline for the completion of each paper is agreed at the commencement of the development process.
The AAMT is currently considering development of a position statement in the area of tutoring of students. If you would like to contribute to the development of a draft document in this area, please contact the AAMT office.

If you would like to provide feedback on the exisiting policies and statements of the organisation, or if you think there are other issues on which the AAMT should consider developing a policy or paper, please contact the AAMT office.

AAMT's Privacy Policy
The AAMT Privacy Policy adopts the National Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000.

A position paper adopted by the January 2009 meeting of the AAMT Council.

Position on National Curriculum in Mathematics (2008)
AAMT Council agreed its position on the development of national curriculum in mathematics, and also collaborated with HTAA, ASTA and AATE to develop a shared statement from the four national professional associations involved in the first 'round' of national curriculum development in Australia.
Position Paper on the Practice of Assessing Mathematics Learning (2008)
Assessment in mathematics is regularly identified by teachers and schools as a major priority for teacher professional learning programs. This statement identifies the complexity of the task of assessing students’ mathematics learning, and the importance of doing it well. Hence the statement will assist in the development of programs of professional learning that enhance teachers’ approaches to assessment in mathematics. Also available in formats designed for single-sided colour or black and white printing.

Position Paper on Early Childhood Mathematics (2006)
A joint position paper of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers and Early Childhood Australia (the peak advocacy organisation for young children and members of the early childhood profession). The paper is also available in a format designed for black and white printing.
Several support papers have been developed to discuss and elaborate on key matters raised in the position paper. Currently available are papers on Play and Resources. If you would like to suggest other topics and/or indicate an interest in writing additional support papers, please contact the AAMT office.

Communiqué for the wider education community arising from the conference Quality Mathematics in the Middle Years (held in Fremantle in 2005). Also available in a format designed for black and white printing.

Standards for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics in Australian Schools (2006 edition)
The AAMT Standards for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics in Australian Schools were first adopted and published in 2002. They were reprinted in 2006: the text of the Standards themselves was unaltered, but the layout was changed to a two-page spread (for easier reference and display), and the explanatory notes were updated to reflect the current situation. Review of the AAMT Standards is among the responsibilities of the National Professional Standards Committee - Mathematics.

This statement updated and extended the earlier National Statement on the Use of Calculators for Mathematics in Australian Schools, published in 1987 and endorsed by all Australian education systems.

This paper examined what constituted "fundamentals of school mathematics" and identified a set of mathematical learnings considered essential for all Australian students.
