National Professional Standards Committee — Mathematics 2010-2012

Membership

The National Professional Standards Committee - Mathematics (NPSCM) consists of:

  • Chairperson, appointed by the AAMT Council;
  • Two members of the AAMT, elected by the AAMT Council;
  • Four practising teachers of mathematics, to be selected on the basis of application;
  • A representative of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA);
  • A representative of the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS); and
  • Other members as appointed from time to time by the AAMT Executive.

The term of appointment to the NPSCM is 3 years.

Specific responsibilities

During the period 2010-2012, the NPSCM will:

  • oversee the Recognising Excellence: Excellence in Teaching Mathematics project.
  • undertake a review of the AAMT Professional Standards for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics in Australian Schools in the light of the work on professional standards by the Ministerial Council for Education, Early Childhood Development and Youth Affairs (MCEECDYA) and the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).
  • consider connections between the AAMT Standards and the new Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.
  • develop proposals for projects to extend the usefulness and uptake of the AAMT Standards.
  • provide advice on matters relating to professional standards to the AAMT Council and Executive.
  • undertake other activities as required by the AAMT Council from time to time.

Meetings and other interactions of the Committee

In the first instance, the NPSCM operates as a virtual committee through the use of ICTs and other means. Face to face meetings may be held, subject to the approval of the AAMT Council or Executive.

A face to face meeting is planned during the first semester of 2010.
