Lesson starters and investigations

Motivational Maths
Paul Swan

A collection of over 70 activities that allow students to investigate how and why mysterious mathe-magical tricks work. There are themes to the tricks: Magic Numbers, Think of a Number, Properties of 9, and so on. Topics include number patterns, algebraic reasoning, sequencing and others, along with almost endless opportunities for students to practise computational skills. The activities are easy to use in the classroom, whether as a lesson starter, to introduce some topics in algebra, or as an extended investigation. There are links to curricula in various states. Activities are presented as blackline masters, and there are explanations of the mathematics behind the tricks for teachers. There is even a set of ‘teacher tricks’ for you to further dazzle your students!
