Navigating through Data Analysis and Probability in Grades 3-5
Suzanne Chapin, Alice Koziol, Jennifer MacPherson, Carol Rezba
This book discusses the development of data and probability concepts in grades 3-5. It provides ideas for engaging students in exploring and extending these concepts through activities that build on students' earlier experiences with data. The activities focus on formulating questions and collecting data through a variety of methods, including observations, surveys, and experiments. Students display their data in bar graphs and line plots, and they describe the distribution of data sets by looking at measures of centre as well as gaps and outliers. Investigations of the usefulness of data in predicting and drawing conclusions lead to a consideration of probability, in which students begin to explore the mathematical likelihood of events.
Accompanying CD-ROM features applets for students to manipulate, master copies of activity pages for students, and resources for teachers' professional development.
