Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics Grades K-3
John A Van de Walle, LouAnn H Lovin
Do you want to share with students the conviction and understanding that mathematics makes sense? If so, the three books in this series were written for you!
The first chapter in each volume is a general discussion of foundations of student-centred instruction. Subsequent chapters are structured around collections of “big ideas” – key mathematical ideas associated with the chapter. Suggestions are provided for problem-based activities and tasks (around 150 per volume), with blackline masters available through a companion website. Assessment notes focus on “listening” to students’ thinking to enable planning for future learning. Occasional “Stop and reflect” markers encourage the reader to pause and reflect on some of the important ideas presented, and each chapter ends with a sample “Expanded lesson” to illustrate how one of the activity ideas from the chapter might be implemented.
A thoughtful, practical and contemporary resource for classroom teachers.
